All Kerala Arts and Festival Association (AKAFA), an organization composed of foreign students from India of Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) Valenzuela City Campus, in coordination with the Department of Co-Curricular Affairs celebrated the Onam Festival last August 29, 2015 at the OLFU quadrangle. Faculty members, employees and other OLFU students also joined in the celebration.
One of the highlights of the celebration is the presentation of the rich Indian culture through song and dance presentations and fun games. The group also prepared various authentic Indian food and served it to their guests and visitors.
Onam Festival is the most important and the biggest harvest festival in Kerala, a state on India’s tropical Malabar Coast, being celebrated in the months of August to September. This festival is a welcome celebration for King Mahabali whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam (this according to a popular Indian legend). People from this place celebrate this festival with joy and enthusiasm. Elaborate feasts and presentation of rich Indian culture such as folk songs, dances and games made Onam Festival so popular among domestic and foreign tourists and it became the National Festival in Kerala in 1961.
