Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) warmly congratulates College of Medicine alumna, Dr. Marivic Bumalay who ranked 10th in the 2020 Philippine Dermatological Society Diplomate Board Examination!
A true achiever, Dr. Bumalay was a scholar during her med student years at OLFU. In 2014, she earned her MD degree, and in 2016, she made her alma mater proud by placing 7th in the Physician Licensure Exam.
Dr. Bumalay underwent specialty training at the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) Department of Dermatology, where she also served as Chief Resident. Currently, she is a Visiting Consultant at the Bicol Region General Hospital and Geriatric Medical Center (formerly Bicol Sanitarium) – Bicol Skin Clinic.
On choosing Dermatology as a specialty, Dr. Bumalay said that it was because of genuine interest. At the same time, it resonated with some of her personal experiences. “During my clerkship days, I found both surgical and medical aspects of the field interesting— I wanted to specialize in something which offers both. I also had to take into account the thing I valued most: time spent with family. Growing up, I was aware of how a chronic skin disease can impact lives,” she said.
The board-certified dermatologist also shared some words of wisdom for OLFU students who are aspiring to become like her someday: “Be clear on your goals. Find something you enjoy doing and pursue it. Learn from your mistakes and never let fear or insecurity stop you. Also, listen to your mentors and take heed of their advice well. We have great mentors. Never hesitate to ask for help. Have an open mind and dream high. And most importantly, pray and trust in God. He will never let you down.”
Indeed, Dr. Bumalay is an epitome of the Fatimanian battle cry, “Rise to the Top!”
