On 04 April 2023, the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2023 unveiled its Top 10 Finalists, a choice roster of which includes Dr. Michael Joseph Dino, Director of the Research Development and Innovation Center (RDIC) of Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU).
Sharing the honor with Dr. Dino are nine other Nursing industry evangelists from various parts of the world, namely: Cathy Cribben-Pearse, Oak Tree Mentoring, United Arab Emirates; Christine Mawia Sammy, Kitui County Referral Hospital, Kenya; Gloria Itzel Ceballo Batista, Hospital del Niño Dr. José Renán, Panama; Jincy Jerry, The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Ireland; Lilian Yew Siew Mee, Raffles Hospital PTE LTD, Singapore; Margaret Helen Shepherd, Royal Devon University Healthcare, England; Shanti Teresa Lakra, G.B. Pant Hospital-Port Blair, India; Teresa Fraga, Associação Nomeiodonada IPSS, Portugal, and Wilson Fungameza Gwessa, Muhimbili National Hospital-Mloganzila, Tanzania.
According to Aster Guardians, the 10 Finalists stood out from the already compelling 52,065 submissions from 202 countries. Further, the award giving body avers that the “finalists and their achievements represent the remarkable courage, conviction, and compassion that drive healthcare all over the world”. A Grand Jury will be deliberating on the Finalists and only one winner will be hailed in the awarding ceremony that has been set in London on 12 May 2023.
Dr. Dino’s profile demonstrates his rich background as a research and development scientist; as a prolific published research author in peer-reviewed journals with topics that deal with leadership, management, nursing, humanoid robots, education-geared technology, and more. Among his accomplishments also are a telehealth program for older adults; a breastfeeding and breastmilk banking project; a three-tier global initiative in propagating breastfeeding, and the #VaccineEquity campaign in support of the International Council of Nurses that was distributed in different parts of the world.
Multi-awarded, Dr. Dino was OLFU’s “Gawad Vicente M. Santos Awardee” for leadership in 2019, and an “Emerging Nurse Researcher Honoree” of Sigma’s 30th Nursing Research Congress 2019. He is also a Past President of the Phi Gamma Chapter of Sigma Nursing, the former of which is also the first and only virtual chapter of the said global institution.
This 2023, he launched his brainchild, the MARVEL Facility, at OLFU’s RISE Tower. MARVEL, which stands for Multiple Applications for Reality-Virtuality Experience Laboratory, is set to be a game-changer in expanding the horizons of learning and teaching by orchestrating a blend of virtual reality, augment reality, and mixed reality through the use of state-of-the-art technology. The project came into fruition through his efforts in collaborating with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the DOST-PCIEERD (Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development), and the global Sigma Phi Gamma Chapter. It is the first of its kind in Philippine research and development, and the third facility of its kind in Southeast Asia.
