Free Cooking Lessons With Cpdap Partner

Have you ever craved for a sumptuous bowl of beef bulgogi but upon reaching the Korean restaurant, you decided to walk away because you could not afford it? How about trying to cook the healthy and colorful bibimbap but you just could not figure out how the Koreans do it?

Worry no more because Daegu Health College (DHC), an academic partner of Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU), is inviting OLFU students, staff and alumni to enroll in a Free Online Culinary Course on traditional Korean food. DHC is doing so to promote Korean culture and to, also, closely collaborate with OLFU.

“Food helps us connect across nations. With this online course, everyone will know more about Korean culture,” DHC Executive Director for International Affairs Kyung-Yong Kim said.

The course will officially open on April 2, 2018, and will be on a modular basis where enrollees will learn at their own pace. Mr. Kim is expecting hotel and restaurant management students to take advantage of the opportunity. However, culinary and cultural enthusiasts of OLFU, regardless of program of study or career discipline are welcome to register.

Once an enrollee completes the online course, he or she will be eligible to participate in one to two weeks of internship in DHC for further immersion. Note that the online course can still be taken independently of the internship. The internship costs US $700 per person for two weeks, or US $400 for one week. The fees are inclusive of the lecture, internship fees, daily meals, domestic transportation, and dormitory.

The course features eight traditional Korean dishes namely: bibimbap rice, gim bap, baechu kimchi, sundubu jjigae, bulgogi, japchae, haemul pajeon, and chimac.

Bibimbap rice is a staple food in Korea, filled with sautéed beef and a variety of colorful vegetables. Gim bap or dried seaweed roll is similar to the Japanese sushi and is seasoned with salt and sesame oil. Baechu kimchi, meanwhile, is a mixture of white radish, red chili powder, minced garlic and salted fish. Sundubu jjigae is tofu stew with a mix of beef or fish, and is known to be very spicy.

Bulgogi is Korean-style marinated beef commonly served with seasoned rice. Japchae is stir-fried glass noodles with an assortment of beef, mushrooms, and vegetables. Haemul pajeon is a seafood in a green onion pancake which is usually served with a soy vinaigrette dipping sauce. Chimac is a combination of chicken and beer and is very popular among bar goers.

To register for the free online course, interested applicants must send a private message (PM) to the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/cpdapolfu) of OLFU’s CPDAP or the Center for Professional Development and Academic Partnerships. The PM must indicate the person’s full name, gender, program, and date of birth. The next step is to secure an endorsement from the College Dean. The latter will then transmit the endorsement to the CPDAP Manager who will, in turn, send to the applicant a special access code to the DHC online course.

Now, the free Korean cooking course is infinitely more delectable than the garden variety Korean telenovela. Cook away, OLFU denizens!
