Guidance & Counseling Center
“ The direction of the guidance program has gone
tremendous transformations from just mere assistance
to isolated incidents to a more comprehensive
range of programs that address the developmental needs of OLFU students.”

Our Lady of Fatima University offers a comprehensive school counseling program that serves to support and enhance the overall institution’s mission by promoting academic excellence and compassionate values formation.

Being an integral part of the educational program, The Guidance and Counseling Center of Our Lady of Fatima University acknowledges the significant role of guidance in molding the youth of today who are confronted with conflicts and problems as they pursue their individual aspirations. It complements learning in the classroom, is student-centered, preventive, and developmental. The counseling program teams with students, parents, and teachers to help students maximize their potentials in academic, social, emotional and personal growth.

All qualified guidance counselors are vested in student success and healthy development through the support services they provide. They work together with all of the OLFU educators to create a dynamic learning community on every campus. They are all responsible for the following:

demonstrates a commitment to success
helps students examine their goals, interests and abilities
promotes positive attitudes and choices
facilitates self-growth seminars, group dynamics and workshops
provides a caring and safe environment for all students
identifies the needs of the students and come up with interventions to better address those needs
consults with parents and teachers through individual and group meetings
monitors students’ performance through continuous coordination with the teachers and parents
provides most-needed counseling to those who are needing for such to be able to cope up with their difficulties and
the counselors work with students through classroom guidance, individual and small and big group counseling

The office provides many guidance services to assist students in their educational endeavors. These are as follows:

1. Counseling is the very core of the guidance services of the institution. It seeks to assist students in learning how to focus on certain concerns and address them positively and finally come up with their own resolutions. It aims to help students achieve optimum growth and development as a person capable of self-direction, sound decision and self-understanding.

All students are required to participate in a counseling experience designed to enhance self-growth and self-awareness. This may be individual or group counseling. At times, counseling is also extended to the parents and teachers, who, to a certain extent, seek also the counseling expertise of the counselors.

2. Information service aids the students by providing them with opportunities to acquire useful information and to process it adequately. Orientation programs for new students are done every start of the semester to help them become acquainted with all of the services that they can enjoy while they stay in the university. The presence of all new students in all orientation programs are always ensured by the office with almost 100%.

3. Referral Systems provides teachers an opportunity to find partners through the guidance counselors in managing not only difficult students but even highly intellectual ones. Through this, the counselors assume the responsibility of improving the adjustment of students through an extensive Monitoring Program.

Twice every month, the teachers submit attendance referrals to the guidance office. In return, the guidance counselors would take appropriate actions like calling, texting and mailing parents informing them about the current status of their child. This has been the most appreciated service being provided by the guidance office. Parents are very vocal about their gratitude to the utmost and genuine concern of the institution to help their children get through in their college life. All possible ways to reach out to them are being done by the department.

4. Testing and Measurement proves the students’ potentials, be it in intelligence, personality, aptitude and skills. It greatly helps each student improve his self-knowledge and discover his own potential and capabilities. IQ and EQ tests are administered and interpreted regularly to all and if needed, appropriate counseling is also provided. Problem profiling is also being done through the psychological tests being administered to particular year levels. Studies regarding its results are prepared and submitted to proper authorities for possible academic interventions. The testing program of the institution has remained to be one of the most comprehensive services provided by the department.

5. Research and evaluation serve as important tools for the administration in adapting, modifying or formulating school policies in the light of research findings. A common procedure for evaluating the effectiveness of instructors is the use of student ratings obtained from a kind of scale. While there are other methods that the school employs in determining instructor’s effectiveness, student-assigned ratings is still the most reliable since students are thought to be in the best position to judge an instructor’s effectiveness since it is with the student that an instructor always has direct contact inside the four corners of the classroom.

Career Development and Placement Programs

The Career Development and Placement Programs of the Guidance & Counseling Center caters to all graduating students who are in great need of preparing themselves to the world of work. Pre-employment seminars are being held that aim to train aspiring students on the technical skills of job hunting. Competent and highly-skilled speakers are invited to help achieve the purpose of the program. Job Fairs are annually done that are not only open to the graduating students but as well as to the alumni of the institution. This allows students to meet with employers from a variety of companies--- like “one-stop shopping” at the mall. The company representatives provide information about general career opportunities as well as specific details on current openings. A minimum of 20 companies every year come and grace this big event and hundreds of students from all colleges come and participate. Mock interviews are also being done that help the students become more oriented about the kind of world they are about to enter after graduation.
