Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) recently donated a total of 6,000 armchairs to different public schools that were devastated by typhoon Yolanda in Leyte. The transfer of the chairs was facilitated and made possible in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC). The initial recipient of the 1,000 armchairs was Javier National High School in Javier, Leyte. The remaining 5,000 chairs will also be given to other public schools in Leyte.
University Administrators headed by Dr. Caroline Marian S. Enriquez, President, and Mr. Don August O. Santos, Executive Vice-President, together with Mr. Richard Gordon, Chairman of the Red Cross, and other PRC officials personally handed the 1,000 armchairs to the officials of the public school on April 28, 2014. Other OLFU Administrators who witnessed the turn-over ceremony were Dr. Vicente O. Santos, Jr., Fatima University Medical Center (FUMC) President; Dr. Yvonne S. Guevara, FUMC Administrator; Mr. Rafael Vicente S. Enriquez, Basic Education Assistant Administrator; Mr. Vincent Kenneth S. Mercado, Student Financial Services Head; and Dr. Alfredo Guevara, University Physician.
Atty. Miguel T. Tezon, PRC Leyte Chapter Chairman, together with other Red Cross officials welcomed the group. Dr. Mario Sumbicon, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent of Leyte, and Mrs. Bernardita L. De Paz, School Principal, were also present and gave their message of acceptance.
During the turn-over ceremony that was attended by students and parents, Dr. Enriquez thanked the school for giving OLFU an opportunity to help them. She also expressed her gratitude to the Red Cross for transporting the chairs to Javier. The officials of PRC also thanked OLFU for its untiring support and for being one of the strongest advocates of the Red Cross humanitarian endeavors.
Fatima and Red Cross officials also visited and prayed at the mass grave in San Jose Church, Tanauan, Leyte where typhoon Yolanda victims were buried.
Meanwhile, Fatima University will also donate 6,000 armchairs to different Department of Education (DepEd) high schools in Valenzuela City, Quezon City, Antipolo City, and Pampanga. A total of 12,000 chairs will be turned-over by OLFU to DepEd for the coming school year.
