Academe and Industry link-up on improving employability for Students from Business and Hospitality Sectors

Motivated by the mission to ensure that its students successfully find gainful employment in the local and international setting, the College of Business & Accountancy (CBA) and the College of Hospitality and Institutional Management (CHIM) of Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) hosted an Academe-Industry Linkages Pathways (AILP) Board Meeting on Curriculum Review and Validation.

 

With the theme, “Inspired by Academic Vision, Fuelled by Industry Innovation,” the event was attended by highly-regarded executives from OLFU’s 30 partner-organizations involved in the fields of business, accountancy, nutrition & dietetics, and tourism & hospitality. Also present were OLFU officials, as well as the faculty members of the CBA and CHIM.

 

Jesse Rebustillo and Andre Alip, Ad-Board Chairmen of the CBA and CHIM, respectively, defined the goals for the day. First, curricula were to be presented in the form of a prospectus. Second, academic needs would be reviewed and validated; making sure these are calibrated to industry needs and are aligned with developing strengths that are in demand in the global workplace. And, third, to propose revisions and improvements on the curricula. “There is a need for academe to catch up what with all the apps we have right now,” Rebustillo emphasized.

 

OLFU President, Dr. Caroline Marian S. Enriquez, echoed Rebustillo’s sentiments when she said the onus was to match industry expectations versus curriculum deliverables. Addressing OLFU’s corporate allies, Dr. Enriquez said, “Now, more than ever, we see the important role of educational institutions in nation building. Yusuf in 2007 wrote that universities act as an important driver of economic development and can catch up through their role in education and technology absorption, adaptation and diffusion.”

 

AILP Ad-Board member, Mae Gabales-Villanueva, herself a Crewing Manager of Abojeb Company, Inc. expressed optimism when she said that there has been some marked improvements in her industry, seeing that more Filipinos have been climbing the corporate ladder.

 

Another board member, Joel L. Tan-Torres, also Chairman of the Board of Accountancy, said that that OLFU must be able to keep up with the CHEd’s most recent enactment of three new accountancy programs.

 

Board member Penny S. Bongato, who is also Executive Director of the IT & Business Process Association of the Philippines, followed-through with a warning that the Philippines has slipped down to the #3 spot in global BPO ranking, having been overtaken by China within a very short time frame. She called out, “Develop an entrepreneurial mindset.” And underscored that the academe must step-up its efforts in mastering the latest developments in digital technology such as robotics, machine learning engines, python programming language, and more.

 

In a quick summary, Dr. Ignacio C. Cordova, Jr., the College Dean for both of OLFU’s CBA and CHIM, narrated how the AILP began with the mantra that “learning outcomes are to be dictated by the industry, and not the academe.” This, being the way in narrowing the gap between acquired skills by education and the actual job skill requirements.

 

 

The participants were then divided into clusters for focus group discussions as each team reviewed the prospectus, then presented their respective insights and recommendations. The prospectus was an earlier collaboration of the AILP Ad-Board Members and provides a preview of directions that curricula would align to. The areas discussed were on: accountancy; management accounting & internal auditing; banking; marketing management; operations and supply chain management; culinary arts; restaurant and fast food chain operations; hotel administration in cruise line operations; meetings, incentives, conventions and events management; travel and tour operations, and entrepreneurial nutrition and dietetics.

 

Also part of the event was the formal hand-over of notices of appointments to the new AILP Advisory Board members.
