Phoenix Juniors melts Titans, claims first NAASCU title
Friday, September 18, 2009

Fatima University Phoenix Juniors used accurate shooting in the third quarter and cruised to a lopsided 89-60 victory over the AMA Computer University Junior Titans to secure 2nd place in the 9th season of the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (NAASCU) held at Cuneta Astrodome last September 10, 2009.

Both the Phoenix and the Titans started well and traded leads in the first quarter. But the Phoenix, led by Larry Rivera, tried to put some distance in the second quarter as they rendered the Titans paralyzed for almost four minutes. The Phoenix led by nine points after the first half, 32-23.

The Phoenix then shot a whopping 15 out of 19 from the field in the crucial third quarter while the Titans had a miserable time with 5 of 23 shooting. This was coupled with OLFU’s dominance in rebounds as AJ Perea went to work on the boards which allowed the Phoenix to pull away from the Titans for good, 65-36.

In the end, the Phoenix burned the Titans as Fatima’s starters outscored AMA’s entire offense. Perea led all scorers with 21, while Rivera chipped in 12 markers. On the losing end, Jonathan Ibarra of Titans paced the scoring with 14.

“I’m very proud of the boys. They have been working extra hard,” said Coach Ralph Rivera of the Phoenix. “Titans is a very good team, they can compete and they also gave us a nice game. In this season, we just can’t defeat the UM Hawklets but I believe that we can beat them if we had enough time to make a big progress in our preparations for that.”

Quarter scores: 16-15, 32-25, 65-36, 89-60

OLFU: 89 – Lugtu – 1, Perea - , Marquez – 10, Torres – 4, Alberto – 8, Khan – 4, Teodoro – 4, Benavides – 9, Rivera – 12, Diego – 9, Balabbo – 7

AMACU: 60 – Reyes – 9, Arceo – 11, Laurel – 11, Manuel – 4, Matias – 9, Hall – 2, Ibarra - 14
