Fatima Phoenix now has a 2-2 win-loss card when they defeated the Centro Escolar University (CEU) Scorpions last July 25, 2009 at the University of Manila Gymnasium.
With errors such as travelling violation, missed passes and free throws, the first quarter ended with a score of 14-16, wherein the Phoenix led by two points over the Scorpions.
CEU started to heat things up on the next quarter but they were stopped by Fatima’s defense. Like what happened in the first quarter, the Phoenix took lots of trips to the free throw line as CEU suffered from penalty only to fail to convert them into points that could have made the Scorpions running after nothing. Before the second quarter ended, CEU finally took the lead but that was short-lived as Basco’s free throw tied the game at 29 and Guidaben scored another basket that took the lead back from CEU as the second quarter ended with a score of 29-31.
Third quarter came and the Scorpions proved that they have an edge in experience when they managed to gain a big lead over the Phoenix. Fatima, which was cursed by their errors in the early half, had foul trouble on one of their point guards and almost nearly countless turnovers, they crumbled under the tough walls and unrelenting attacks from the outside of CEU. Third quarter ended with Nike smiling on CEU, 52-43.
The mythical avian finally flew back to the right track on the last quarter as they played good defense and halted the rally of the Scorpions. Slowly but surely, they closed in on CEU with the combined efforts of the team spearheaded by Guidaben and Basco and as the clock ticked close to game over, a three-pointer from Valdevilla and clutch free throws from Panes and Monserat helped their team take the lead back from CEU. Bedlam on the bench of the Phoenix as the 4th quarter ended with a final score of 70-62.
Fatima: Culala – 4 points, Monserat – 14 points, David – 6 points, Basco – 9 points, Zapanta – 11 points, Valdevilla – 4 points, Panes – 4 points, Guidaben – 16
