The Fatima University Medical Center (FUMC) conducted the first Intravenous (IV) Therapy Training Course in the University - the answer to the many staff nurses and alumni who go to other hospitals to acquire their IV licenses.

Held last November 14-16, 2009 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the FUMC Audio Visual Room, a total of 63 registered nurses attended the three-day training program. Primarily, they were FUMC nurses, graduates of the University, and nurses from other hospitals such as Valenzuela General Hospital, Manila Central University Hospital, Calayan District Hospital, and Pacific Pharma Generic Incorporation.

Ms. Florita Pangilinan, Nursing Director, emphasized in her welcome remarks that only a registered IV therapist can give medications intravenously, a practice that is mandated by the Nursing Law.

Ms. Elsa Castro, Association of Nursing Service Administrator of the Philippines Institute representative, lectured about objectives and orientation to the course, historical background of IV therapy and ethico-legal basis followed by a review of anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system and blood vessels which was given by Dr. Jose Arnel Manalili. Dr. Ma. Janeth Serrano discussed about fluid and electrolytes, IV solutions, pharmacology of drugs and its interaction, emergency drugs and drug allergy. For the last part, Mr. Eron Inocencio and Mr. Johnpet Romero talked about blood, blood component therapy, and blood transfusion reaction.

The second day started with a lecture about IV infection control, risks and complication by Mr. Gabriel Naig followed by a discussion on nursing process, duties, responsibilities, and standard of care with documentation by Ms. Melissa Sacedo. Ms. Joan Marie Nepomoceno focused on nursing consideration, hospital policies in blood transfusion, use, care and maintenance of IV equipment and supplies.

After several lectures and demonstrations, individual procedural examinations ensued on the third day followed by evaluation and distribution of certificates.

Based on the 7th edition of IV module, nurses should complete their cases composed of six IV insertions, six IV fluid administrations and two blood transfusions within three months. Completion of their cases will be on FUMC or in other hospitals depending on the hospital and the attendee's availability.

People who made the event possible were Ms. Pangilinan and Mr. Naig, Operating Room Head Nurse and IV trainer. Preceptors were Ms. Nepomoceno, Emergency Room Head Nurse; Mr. Marion Pabeleo, Dialysis Nurse; and Ms. Sacedo.

"This training course is one of the greatest achievements of the hospital because this is the first time they conducted such training here," Valentina Norio, FUMC-Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse, commented. "This is a big help to us. I'm hoping FUMC will continue to render services like this which helps improve the knowledge and skills especially of the fresh graduates."

Mr. Naig, also furthered that if such training would be successful and would accomplish its mission, more IV seminars can be expected in the coming months.
