Med Tech Dean presents plenary paper
Wednesday, November 18, 2009
by : Erden Jan Legaspi
Dr. Jose Jurel Nuevo, Dean of the College of Medical Technology, presented an institutional research in the plenary session of the 1st International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research held at Lantaka Hotel by the Sea, N.S. Valderoza Street, Zamboanga City held on October 5 to 7, 2009.

The conference hosted by Universidad de Zamboanga carried the theme "Convergence of Research and Global Issues on Peace, Environment and Economy". Dean Nuevo presented the research entitled "Tullahan River Initiative Project (TRIP): A Research Partnership in Saving Our People...Saving Our River", the fourth research presented among eight plenary researches chosen through rigid screening.

The said institutional research, whose proponents include Dr. Elaine Lanuza-Pascual (College of Arts and Sciences), Dr. Marilou Bella Baxa Daguplo (College of Medicine) and Dr. Remigia Nathanielsz, Research and Development Director and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, aims to help in the government's Tullahan River Rehabilitation Program and participate in the endeavor by providing a comprehensive assessment of the river's status and at the same time offer scientific data and findings related to its physical, chemical, and biological condition.

"It's a big honor to be a part of international research conferences like these, to have your ideas be heard in public, and the fruit of your toil to be recognized not only locally but also internationally as that's every researcher's ultimate dream," Dr. Nuevo said. Not to mention, the fact that the research, which carried the University's name, was presented in a plenary session - that is in front of a big audience, with delegates coming from other universities in the Philippines and the invited notable speakers from other countries - by itself, was no ordinary feat.

"It does not only give glory to the school; it also shows and proves that Fatima can produce papers of quality," he added.

Furthermore, Dean Nuevo will also be representing the University in the 5th QS-APPLE (Asean Pacific Professional Leaders in Education) Conference 2009 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, Malaysia on November 24, with the collaborative research he did with Dr. Anacleta P. Valdez (Dean, Lyceum of the Philippines) entitled "Curriculum Model for Allied Medical Programs: Lessons from International Benchmarking".

The conference is in partnership with University of Malaya and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Moreover, Dr. Nuevo and Dr. Valdez's research, which will be presented in a parallel session this time, is the sole entry of the Philippines in the said international convention of educators in Asia Pacific.

"The goal of Fatima is to promote a culture of research and to encourage its students to become research-oriented, and this is one way of doing such," he explained. Dr. Nuevo also said that these achievements support and are indeed in line with the motto of the Research and Development Center which is "Research, Publish, and Flourish."
